Hill College Board of Regents holds October 2023 monthly meeting

On October 24, 2023, the Hill College Board of Regents met for the monthly regular session meeting.

The minutes from the September meeting were approved. The financial report was also presented and approved. Enrollment numbers were presented and noted a continued increase.

Hill College President Dr. Thomas Mills presented his report, beginning with Texas Heritage Museum Executive Director and Chief Curator John Versluis, who received the North Texas Community College Consortium Jesse Jones Leadership Award in October. Each year, the Jesse Jones Leadership Award, the North Texas Community College Consortium’s (NTCCC) highest honor, is presented to an individual who has shown the leadership, service, collaboration, and excellence in communication to the North Texas community colleges they serve.

Dr. Mills also gave a report on the college’s recent blood drive, the dual credit recruiting for the Glen Rose Independent School District, and the “Beat the Dean” ping pong tournament.

He also shared recent and upcoming events, including the Hill College Players, who presented their first performance of the season Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe by Eric Coble; the Phillip H. Lowe Performing Arts Series, which is celebrating their 30th anniversary with their second event of the season, the Baylor Brass on November 9, 2023; and the Hill College band and choir, which will perform on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

On Monday, November 13, 2023, the Texas Heritage Museum will hold its second annual Medal of Honor Memorial Brick Ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. A museum tour and reception will follow.

Personnel updates were also presented and approved.

An update on the installment of the baseball field bleachers was presented. Proposals were presented for the dugout replacement, the bullpen relocation, and the replacement of the R-Panel for the press box. The total cost proposed was $113,944; the motion was approved.

Interim Athletic Director and Dean of Students Randy Graves presented the athletic report, with updated standings for volleyball, men and women’s soccer, men and women’s cross country, rodeo, and men and women’s basketball. Updates on baseball and softball were also provided.

Paul Davenport, the women’s soccer coach, was named Region 5 Coach of the Year and women’s soccer athlete Davia Richards was named Region 5 Player of the Year, the ninth year in a row that one of Hill College’s soccer players has received the honor. 

The board also approved the purchase of a 6.4-acre tract adjacent to the Hill College property on the Wallace Campus at a cost of $207,350.
